Five Apps Go Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

A while back, short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US producing 49% of it. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure stood at about $750M, and full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Five names lead the conversation, namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, Watch Out! I Call the Final Shots drama and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has run into at least one of them. On the surface they appear identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they change what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

Before the rounds, here is the entire field on one screen. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures shown in the US App Store, though they vary by country, platform and promotion. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. If a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source released the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. Use the grid as your scoreboard and treat the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size

Being the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. Backed by China’s COL Group and based in Sunnyvale, Crazy Maple Studio launched it in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. Per MPA estimates, its 2025 revenue came to $785M, with $1.05B expected for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M by Sensor Tower’s count, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Although DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax seems to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. GoodShort, for context, holds about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Cost

The apps seem most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave sells a weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. On top of that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, mark the different route DramaBox takes. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass cost about $80, and that means a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, on the strength of a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices change by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, though the app has free options too. Do not treat look-alike sites, modded APKs or “unlimited coins” generators as a safe shortcut; they are unofficial, so keep away. Winner: clearly ReelShort.

Round 4: Where You Can Watch

These apps truly diverge on the question of screens. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, and progress syncs across devices, and it also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. My Drama holds the trump card: an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, which ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort on balance, though My Drama claims the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

By raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages; as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly relies on AI for more than 80% of its newly released content. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort comes out ahead, thanks to The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Fox’s commitment to 200+ vertical titles over two years gives My Drama the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, purely on volume.

Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print

DramaWave runs away with this one. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, and its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. For anyone switching between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. Also take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave, by a distance.

Best For: The Final Picks

How you watch determines the best choice, since no single short drama app takes every round. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Being the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. On sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that dwarf everything else in the grid. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Feeling tempted by all five? Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
